The Psychology of Unnecessary Decisions
Most of life’s burdens are not the major events,
they are the unnecessary decisions, the borrowed responsibilities and the meaningless choices that quietly consume the mind.
The Falkland Principle originated from legal history, but it is now one of the most profound human psychological truths that it discloses:
“If it is not necessary to make a decision, then do not make it.”
Modern man is exactly struggling here.
Not a single one of us was taught that being still is also a decision.
Nevertheless, the world did not allow us to stay still but kept on forcing us to be in a constant state of choice making:
What will you wear?
What will you post?
What should you say?
Which path should you take?
Who do you owe a reply?
This never-ending traffic of decisions is too much for the mind.
There is a term for this phenomenon in psychology, which is now recognized by psychologists: Decision fatigue.
The Falkland Principle in Psychology
The brain needs energy for each decision that is made.
Moreover, the mind is frequently more fatigued by the unnecessary decisions than by the necessary ones.
As far as the unnecessary decisions are concerned:
* The result is of little value,
* There is a lot of uncertainty,
* The person feels that he is not responsible for the situation, nevertheless he/she uses energy.
The inside of this conflict becomes a mental abyss.
Therefore the Falkland Principle provides not verbal, but quite a considerable insight:
“The mind should not be engaged with what is unnecessary.”
Contemporary psychology confirms the same idea:
The mind’s ability to concentrate is limited, while the mental noise is without limits.
This is the reason why unnecessary decisions are not only exhausting but they also lower your frequency, disrupt concentration and sabotage inner clarity.
The Philosophy of the Falkland Principle:
In Today’s World
In this era, the Falkland Principle is a somewhat straightforward rule:
– It is not necessary to reply to each and every message.
– You are not obligated to be involved in every disagreement.
– There is no need for you to make a comment on every piece of information.
– Following every opportunity is not your duty.
– You do not have to perform a role in every relationship.
And what is more important than anything else:
One should not feel the need to analyze each and every emotion.
Some are simply meant to pass by not to be resolved.
The truth is that real power is not in doing more, but in availing oneself of lesser unnecessary things.
A Philosophical Perspective
The Falkland Principle fundamentally is a statement about consciousness:
“Mental energy is consumed by what it is not supposed to think about and is increased by what it is actually meant to understand.”
Hence wise people talk less, choose more selectively, focus on less however, everything they pay attention to becomes significant.
While some people make their lives noisy, others take the road of simplification with consciousness.
The question is as simple as this: Are you the one who takes the mind to exhaustion, or the one who controls it?
